Gallery: Tempel 1 (2004-2005)

Observation made by Robert J. Morgan

Image Parameter Details
Comments: I began my observation at 21:00PDT using a 3xbarlow/7.5mm(480x)eyepiece. Tempel 1 was not sighted. Using a 3x barlow/25mm(144x) eyepiece I located Tempel 1. The comet was dim, a difficult target to aquire.
At 21:20PDT, using only the 25mm(48x)eyepiece, I confirmed my sighting at AZM: 209.0d ALT: 37d. Tempel 1 was positioned between the stars HD118675 and HD118281.
21:30PDT to 21:40PDT: Observed using a 17mm(71x) eyepiece. Tempel 1 was still faint compared to 9th magnitude HD118675 and 8th magnitude HD118281. As the night progressed, Tempel 1 became an easier observation target. This was aided by another eyepiece change at 21:40PDT to 10mm(120x).

Significant events and times:
21:29PDT: Noted two(2) 'flare' events of the comet as it brightened briefly in rapid succession.
22:52PDT: At time of impact there was a noticable, though slight, brightening of the comet.
23:06PDT: 14 minutes after impact Tempel 1 appeared much brighter. Estimate increase of +1 in visual magnitude based on comparison with the 8th magnitude star HD118281.
23:12PDT: satellite SL-16 R/B; USSPACECOM catalog No: 28353; International Designation Code: 2004-021-B passed through the lower portion of the telescope field of view.
23:14PDT: Tempel 1 is dimming now, in comparison to the first sighting at 21:20PDT.
23:20PDT: Tempel 1 is now very dim and difficult to observe.
23:20:15PDT: lost sight of Tempel 1 at AZM: 237.5d ALT: 21d.
